Argent
Formed by Rod Argent in 1969 after The Zombies folded, tired of life on the road, with an intention to play something heavier, without sacrificing the great songwriting of that band. Argent, often working with Zombies bassist Chris White, was the main songwriter, although Russ Ballard would become one of the most prolific songwriters of the next half-century. It was his inability to get more of his songs recorded by Argent that led Ballard to leave the band in 1974 for a solo career.
Singles like Hold Your Head Up, written by Argent/White, and God Gave Rock and Roll To You by Ballard, brought chart success. Albums were less commercially successful - All Together Now got as high as #13 in 1972. It's probably fair to say they were more critically appreciated than commercially successful.
A second line-up saw Ballard replaced by two guitarists, but recording success proved elusive thereafter, and the band folded in 1976.
An Indian summer of reunions occurred in the early 2010s, with a final performance in 2013, supporting - who else - the reformed Zombies.
